Meet the Massey – Dave

Since it was Dave’s idea to create this new website feature, we asked him to be the first to give us the lowdown on his Massey journey.

Name
Dave Rowbottom.

Running since
“I used to run (because I had to) when I was in the army from the age of 18-25 but hated it and it put me off for 10 years. I’ve been running since January 2023.”

Massey Runner since
“I joined in Jan 2023 to help keep me motivated to run. It worked!”

Best thing about Massey Runners
“The people!!! I’ve always struggled with self-esteem and meeting new people. Add that into now living in a City I’m not from and don’t know anybody and prior to joining Masseys I really struggled and despite being happily married, was quite lonely outside of that. I’m eternally grateful to the Massey members for making me feel so welcome from Day 1.”

Favoured distance
“Half marathon.”

Favourite parkrun event
“I’ve only done 3 separate venues. I really enjoyed the terrain and course of Leamington (despite the hill!)”

Favourite terrain
“Generally road. I haven’t done much trail or XC yet but keen to give it a go.”

Toughest running challenge
“Breaking 50 minutes for 10Km.”

Pre-race ritual
“Get up early to re-hydrate. Set up my gel flask. Get dressed and don’t forget the nipple plasters! I’m a big fan of a marmalade sandwich as a pre-race breakfast. I get quite bad pre-run anxiety at the best of times so this is just about the only thing I can stomach and digest without getting nauseous.”

Running year ahead
“I’m doing my first marathon at Manchester in April. I’m also signed up for Warwick Half in Feb. I’d like to do a bit more parkrun tourism so that might be a focus after the marathon.”

Best piece of running advice received
“I’m a firm advocate of ‘Run slow enough to enjoy it’. Can also recommend joining your local running club!”
