Having pulled out of the Coventry half marathon on three previous occasions due to injury, I was delighted to be given the all-clear to run following a double ankle injury sustained in October 2024 and March 2025.
But what could go wrong did go wrong. I underestimated how much fitness I had lost without proper training for some months, and went out at a pace I could not sustain, ultimately succumbing to the hills. I underestimated the heat. I inexplicably decided not to take my own hydration, having never done this before over this distance.
It all went against me: fatigue, cramp, and overheating conspired to produce a finish time 35 minutes slower than my average for this distance. And I hated every single minute of it.
