Ian O’Donnell took part in the Leicester Marathon with Nicky Ellis & Cathy Keay running the Half. Both races started and finished in Victoria Park. The route took runners north out along the Melton Road and through Thurmaston, at the 6 mile mark the full and half runners split off, with the full continuing north and around the villages of Barkby Thorpe, Rearsby and Syston and then meeting up at the point where the half marathon split off. The route then went through the lovely Watermead Country Park following the River Soar and Grand Union Canal. At mile 10 the National Space Centre appeared and runners were directed through Abbey Park. The final mile through the main shopping centre was a tough uphill, but the support from the Sunday shoppers was great, with a final sprint back into Victoria Park.
“A great race, really well organised, great marshals, an interesting and varied route with definitely PB potential (in fact all 3 of us got PB’s), plus a goody bag with a range of food, a great medal and a long sleeved technical T-shirt – I will definitely be back to do this one again! “ – Cathy Keay
