Abingdon Marathon

This was my first proper marathon but definitely not my last and was great fun.

The race begins and ends on the track at Tilsley Park Stadium (9am start). Abingdon is just over an hours drive from Coventry, and there was plenty of parking with a 20 mins walk to the start. First held on 3 May 1982, the race is famous among the UK running community for its flat, fast and largely road course. There was a bit of ‘trail’ and some pavement running when using roads that weren’t closed. There were also parts of the course when the runners were sharing the road with the traffic, but drivers seemed generally careful. It’s very well marshalled and both the marshals and spectators were very supportive (plenty of sweets and high 5s). There was a well organised bag drop and the local Scout troop was raising money by selling burgers, hot dogs and confectionery before and after the race. Tons of portaloos and the were all very clean – top marks! I believe this race is over subscribed every year and has a maximum of 1500 runners, so it doesn’t feel busy or crowded anywhere on the course. The course is a sort of figure of eight and you run both through the pretty town of Abingdon, picturesque villages, countryside, some housing estates and along the Thames (or is it the Isis?). As already alluded to, this course is incredibly flat so if you are looking for a fast qualifying time for another marathon, it’s a good choice. I’m sure I would not have done a sub five hour time if there had been any hills. There were plenty of water stations along the course providing water and isotonic drinks in recyclable paper cups. Some of the stations also offered gels and fruit. We had a short burst of rain before the race started but in most part it was dry and cool with a bit of a breeze towards the end. There is a 6 hour cut off that I got the impression is quite strictly enforced. The race cost about £61 (not including a t-shirt) so not the cheapest, but still not too bad. The goody bag included a medal, marathon branded snood and protein flapjack. There were free cold drinks, teas and coffees and biscuits at the finish. If you looking for a fast, friendly and not overly crowded marathon on your doorstep, this is one to consider.
