Race report by Dave Phillips.
This 12k (c7.2 miles) race was as good as ever with 17 Massey runners in a field of 604 even if it was cold and dampish. The history of this event needs explaining I reckon so here we go.
In 1975 I started my accountancy business in Stratford and went round the local companies asking if they wanted an accountant. Roman Motors ( a motor parts distributor) said they were already catered for but Spot Garage a local garage and Citroen dealer might do. I saw them and they became my 1st client so thanks a lot Roman.
Then a few years later Roman Motors sponsored the 1st Roman 9 mile road race and in 1984 I did my 1st with 232 others and came 188th in 65.49. Hmmm!
So it’s a well-established event but Roman Motors is no more and it’s not a 9 miler any more but the names live on even if one is in the negative.
So well done Roman and Stratford AC.
I think I’ve done them all since 1984 but after yesterday’s XC at the very muddy Lilleshall course, today’s 1st half was a struggle as most of it is uphill but needs must so on I plodded. Well done Stratford AC for getting the Banbury Road closed for some time-a 1st for this event.
Then at last Loxley came into view around the half way mark and then it was downhill and flat to the finish so OK there but overtaking anyone was not on the cards today. So what’s new there did I hear you say?
Good HQ for this event with super changing, hot showers (2nd time in 2 days) and good catering.
So that’s 4 races done in Jan and it’s only ½ way through.
Midland Vets XC next week at Wolverhampton.
